Although 2 of my friends absolutely loved this book and recommended it to me (one 'cried her eyes out' all through it and particularly at the end), I'm afraid it just didn't do it for me. The characters were like cardboard cut-outs. What really grated was that they all spoke in exactly the same way - in long speeches that were totally unbelievable. And everyone was so nice - even the sister, in the end (whoops, hope that doesn't spoil anything for anyone). I found myself flicking through it, just to get it finished and I could never quite forget that I was reading a novel. (for me, the best books are like stepping into another world and forgetting where you are).
I don't like to be 'nasty' - this is Kirsty Wark's first novel, after all and she clearly spent a lot of time on it and worked hard (it's long!) and lots of people love it - so perhaps there's something wrong with me. Try it and see for yourself!
