10,000 Years of Art - Phaidon Publication,
This review is from: 10,000 Years of Art (Paperback)
This is an excellent publication. It is essentially a reference work of readily accessible information regarding human creations of the last 10,000 years -going back to 8,000BC. This book contains 500 objects of art that span the world. It is a perfectly balanced selection and presentation. Each page contains a colour photograph, the place of origin and date of the object under discussion, together with a short but concise explanation of the object, together with cultural information and section regarding the circumstances of its particular history down through to the modern time, or details of its discovery.
Reading this book is like walking through the corridors of all the museums in the world. Everything is in one very good compendium that introduces the great art objects of the world in a format that enhances knowledge for the object itself, as well as inspires respect for the subject of art in general. The paperback contains 453 numbered pages, and is separated into 4 sections:
500 works of art.
The book is presented in a chronological order, with the oldest work of art featured first, leading to newest work of art. The first and oldest work in the Argentinian Hand Stencils found on a cave wall. They have the ascribed date of 8,000BC, but may date to as early as 10,000BC. The last entries date to 1995, and feature examples of modern art from the USA. This book is a wealth of human knowledge that will enhance the mind of the reader. Human art often presents as 'object', the highest attributions and aspiration of Humankind. A very excellent book.
