Definitely worth sampling,
This review is from: Taneyev: Orchestral Works (Audio CD)
I am delighted to concur with many of the points made by J Scott Morrison in his review.
I had previously sampled Taneyev's music (a Chandos disc) and found it somewhat sterile and uninteresting. I parted with that CD. On the strength of Mr Morrison's review I bought this disc and have to say I was suitably impressed!
The first thing to mention is the quality of the orchestral playing AND of the recording. The orchestra (to my ears at least) could well be one of the world's finest and the recording is not just the best Naxos disc I have heard but one of the very best from any company. Clear, well-balanced, immediate, with every instrument and group of instruments perfectly in focus.
As to the music, I could have done without the little cantata, which for me is no more than a trifle, but everything else is very involving and impressive. Even in the Overture on a Russian theme, Taneyev sounds (to me) a composer with his feet planted firmly in the soil of western musical tradition, far removed from the Nationalists, but none the worse for that.
I urge anyone with an interest in music of the period, especially Russian music, to give this a try.
