AMATEURISH AND UTTERLY DISAPPOINTING,
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Mikhail Baryshnikov: Merce My Way (Hardcover)
Superficially an attractive book with high quality presentation and a smart design, the contents are deeply disappointing, the photographic equivalent of daubs, and one suspects of no value to anyone who is interested in the movement and spirit and precision which underlies all dance. The pictures are vibrant and colourful but intentionally blurred, and to such a degree that many of the dancers pictured are so rendered for it to be impossible to tell the men from the women - let alone one pose or movement from another. Cunningham was clearly an important and pioneering choreographer, and Baryshnikov enjoyed the dancing career his talents richly deserved. He's no photographer, however; or if he is this wasteful and expensive volume cannot be representative and does him (and Cunningham) no credit whatever. On almost every page it is impossible to see what is going on, and instead one is left with abstract washes of colour which say nothing about the photographer's art or the dancer's. What a waste of money.
