This is the first in a set of five audio adventures starring the most popular time lord of them all, Tom Baker. This is the third series of five, produced over successive years to coincide with Christmas. Each in the series is a separate adventure, working within a five episode story arc.
The series has evolved a little from its humble beginnings as almost an audio book reading with a very limited cast to a much grander affair with a much bigger cast. Tom Baker is, as usual, great as Four, all mild eccentricity and other worldly mannerisms. Just a few lines in and Tom's melodious voice conjures up so many happy childhood memories of toothy grins, scarves and jelly babies. It's a lively adventure, Tom is on form and supported by a great cast, including the ever reliable Michael Jayston in a welcome return to the Whoniverse. It's got a bit of a cliff hanger in set up for the next in the series, but is largely a self contained adventure and well worth getting. 4 stars, and I look forward to hearing the rest.
As an aside, Tom has now joined the Big Finish team (who also work with Peter Davison, Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy and Paul McGann along with a host of original companions) to produce a new series of classic Who adventures that are well worth checking out.
