Not for the emotionally fragile,
This review is from: Bitter Sweet (CD) (Audio CD)
First off, a few comparisons. Kim's voice is reminiscent at times of Lucinda Williams and Mary Chapin Carpenter, and if you like those two, you'll probably like this. Her band - who are excellent - sound much like the Mavericks, with reverb-heavy lead guitar over layered acoustics and 12-strings and that distinctive organ sound.
The overall effect though, reminds me very strongly of Linda Ronstadt's early 70s Asylum albums - and coming from me that is high praise indeed.
This is the only Kim Richey album I've heard so far, so I don't know how it compares with her others, but be aware that this is very much a concept album on the theme of lost love - a sort of alt-country "Blood On The Tracks", if you like - and every bit as painful if you're in an emotionally fragile state. So approach with caution all you broken hearts out there.
Anyway, excellent album, well worth the five stars.
