The Perfect Accompaniment to the Normans TV series,
This review is from: Millennium: The End of the World and the Forging of Christendom (Paperback)
I would imagine that the period surrounding the first Millenium, year 1000 in case you didn't know is a big mystery to most people. From 1066 onwards things can be at least tagged to a key point in history, but what happened before this key point in history?
If you want the answers then look no further. If names like Charlemagne, Cerdic and the dark ages are of interest and the real history of the marauding Norsemen or Normans as we now know them, then this book will work a treat for you.
The book starts slowly, with plenty of references that might have you scratching your head, but the story itself is utterly absorbing and the descriptions of the horrendous tales of take overs, conquests and appalling deeds acted upon most common people in the name of the papacy and other pagan religions will have you in a state of shock.
The book does keep a nice flow and I would imagine would please a historian as much as those of us who just want to be ready for the next pub quiz!
A really superb read!
