An invitation into the music,
This review is from: Debussy: The Complete Piano Music (Audio CD)
There are some pianists who impress with their intellectual rigour, and there are some who take the breath away with sheer technical skill. The best of all refuse to point to themselves, instead they break down the division between performer and audience, and invite the listener into the music.
Gordon Fergus-Thompson is such a pianist. Listening to these CDs is like being at an exhibition of Monet and Renoir paintings, and having figures in them reach out a hand and invite you into the scenes, into the light, into what the painters experienced and fleshed out with paint on the canvas. Here the gift he gives the listener is the gift of being taken right into the inspiration of this music. Come and look down on those Reflections in the Water, come play amongst the dancing snowflakes, come look up at the light of the moon.
These are some of the best recordings of Piano music I have ever heard. And at this price? Snap them up and wallow in them.
