Goshawk - study of a rare bird of prey.,
This review is from: Goshawk (Paperback)
This book is an intense focus and study of a rare bird of prey, the Goshawk
The writing has energy, and excitement. It has musicality: alliteration, assonance, repetition, and rhyme, all woven together to create an almost hypnotic spell. The imagery is excellently crafted. Precise and vivid descriptions of the bird appear alongside clear and sharp depictions of landscape.
Goshawk is a magical book: a birdwatchers field study; a visceral invocation; a metaphysical meditation on the life and world of a hawk. And, the illustrations throughout are a perfect accompaniment
John Evans is a writer, filmmaker, and naturalist. He is also know for publicly campaigning on issues affecting wildlife and the environment. He was also one of the writers who famously spoke out about the lack of democracy and accountability in the policies and practices of the quasi-masonic arts council funded quango (Academi) who control literature in Wales. To pardon a pun: this man has ruffled a few feathers!
This book is a welcome step-forward in wildlife writing, and landscape poetry - John Evans, has created his own contemporary pastoral tradition
As he says in his introduction, this book is a homage to the Northern Goshawk (Accipiter gentilis) and both the book and bird are indeed worthy of high praise.
