Better than Conan.,
This review is from: The Sword And The Sorcerer [DVD] (DVD)
In the Same way that 'Robocop' was a much better Judge Dredd film than 'Judge Dredd', this is a much better Conan film than any of the Conan films. Lacking the pretention (and inteminable length) of the 1st Conan film, this is closer in feel to 'Jason and the Argonauts', or 'The 7th Voyage of Sinbad'. Only with more violence and nudity.
The low budget is obvious, but the FX are good, especially the opening scene (stolen wholesale from Robert E Howard) and can anyone say they thought the (very expensive) giant mechanical snake from the Conan film looked even slightly convincing? The lead actor may not be as impressively muscled as Arnie, but he can act, and is much more athletic, rather than muscle bound, so the fight scenes are fast and entertaining.
There's an element of humour here, which is just about at the right level - it reminds me of 'Big Trouble in Little China' in that respect. Good (cheap) fun. It's not great art, but that's no bad thing.
