Excellent Product - Don't Expect 6km Range in Normal Use,
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Motorola TLKR T5 Two Way Radio Twin Pack - Black (Electronics)
I purchased these items for a holiday in New Zealand. It was great to be able to go trekking and leave my wife for brief periods while going to check out a view or take some photos with the security that we could still remain in constant communication even though mobile phone signals were nowhere to be found, or without incurring a huge phone charge. The package is very well put together, with two walkie talkies, two sets of rechargeable batteries, a 230V charger (note, this charger will *not* work in the US on 110V - though you can use standard AAA batteries instead, which is a good feature), which can accommodate the handsets themselves or just the battery packs if necessary, belt clips, and some reasonably detailed instructions written in good English. There are a fair number of features on these handsets. The most useful of these is probably the handsfree iVox mode (which the T5 supports and the cheaper T3 doesn't), which allows communication without having to pick the handset up. You can also use like a baby monitor, to pick up sound remotely. I wouldn't recommend using them as baby monitors however, as they emit quite a lot of radio wave energy - far more than a standard baby monitor - which they have to, to give a 6km range. You can actually feel the antenna get noticeably warm after a few seconds use! You won't of course get 6km of range out of them unless you're in perfect atmospheric conditions and in direct line of sight. If there are obstacles like mountains between you, you may not get more than 100m out of them, but this is the same as with any similar device, so not a particular drawback with this item. Construction is robust, and the ends are rubberised, so I'm sure they would survive a good pounding or a fall from head height onto a hard surface unless they landed badly. They are also fairly well sealed against splashing water or rain. Would I buy them again? Absolutely. If you have a real need for a walkie talkie and think you may find the hands free mode useful, I'd definitely recommend the T5 over the T3. The fact that the charger is only 230v and not multi-voltage incurs a one star penalty.
