This could have been so much better. The characters are engaging and although the initial plot device to marry off the hero and heroine is rather wobbly, generally there is just enough to keep you reading.
Two factors prevented this novel achieving another star. Firstly, the background mystery is not particularly well handled, and tends to be lost amongst Cynssyr's (and what a silly name that is!) other duties. In this muddle, the author nearly loses all sense of jeopardy, and ultimately the denouement is no great surprise.
Secondly, and I'm beginning to feel like a broken record, the author's research of Regency England seems to be non-existent. Ms Jewel, using "half one" to indicate the time of day is a relatively modern usage. Regency ruffians did not drink lager, and Regency beds had no duvets. Both laqer and duvets are more recent European imports. If these were the only examples, then a pass could be given, but there are many more. Please, please, read your Austen and Heyer before you start typing.
I didn't hate this book, but it left a lot of room for improvement.
