This piece of hardware works like a dream... on my new laptop. I tried plugging it in to an older desktop computer (we're talking Pentium III 650Mhz) and it just wouldn't accept it, saying there was a problem with it. I was about to either return or shove it in a drawer somewhere and give up trying. But as I said, it worked no problem on my new laptop; simple plug and play and up popped all my old files.
It's a good product, but might not function on all machines.
After a few weeks of usage, it has become apparent that in some way, the cable connection is not completely secure, because sometimes when it gets moved around, the disk drive resets as if unplugged momentarily.

About your P3 machine, make sure you have xp with sp2 installed otherwise usb2.0 won't work.
If your drive isn't backwards compatible with usb1.1 then that's why it doesn't work.

Your Pentium machine likely doesn't have enough power at the USB port you used. Try all the USB ports, sinec you may have one set of USB ports on low power and one set on high.
