Their best album, and the best place to start,
By A Customer
This review is from: Bookends (Audio CD)
Bookends is simply Simon and Garfunkles Finest Hour. "Sure, Bridge Over Troubled Water" had the hits, but this is the album that marks Paul Simon out as a mature songwriter.
It's the albums first half which captures your heart. This was designed as a mini story, dealing with childhood to adulthood to old age. Everysong here is beautiful, from the haunting Bookends Theme to the old and weary Old Friends. In between we have Save the Life of My Child, Overs and America, possibly their greatest song.
The rest of the album doesn't maintain those high standards, (how could they?) but they are not mere filler. Fakin' it was a hit single and Puckys Dilemma is a nice tune. At the Zoo is a song which will grow on you to become one of your favorites, and i'm sure everybody knows Mrs Robinson.
The remastered version sounds great and the linear notes are insightful. The extra tracks include an alternative version of Save, as well as an old b-side. This is a record you must buy.
