Move along, nothing to see here!!,
This review is from: Winx: Volume 1 [DVD] (DVD)
It may say Winx Club on the cover and star the same characters, but this is definitely not Winx Club as it was meant to be!
Each episode is cut up, edited, switched around and reversed in unprecedented proportions. Not the fault of Contender Ent. though, I must point out.
What extras there are, whilst cute and mildly entertaining for the first 2 minutes, are not really worth the effort!
Best to avoid this version and buy the Italian released DVDs instead, as they contain the episodes as they were made and have the Rai English audio, which is the original Italian script translated accurately and using good voice actors!

Hi I found your comment really helpful, would you be able to tell me where I can find the Rai English Audio versions? Please, I would really appriciate it. Thanks :)

Yes, you can actually get them from Amazon.it (you can order it from there, I've bought many, just log in with you current user & pass), though I must warn you, the series has been re-released recently by '01 Distribution', their release does not have the English audio track (except season 2, which theirs does have the English audio.. very confusing). So if you see an '01' logo, which is a white box with blue border and 01 in the centre, ignore it. The DVDs to actually get, are by 'Mondo Home Entertainment', their releases have the English audio track on them (though the menu's are always in Italian, but it's obvious which are the options you need to select for the English track, or just press the audio button on your remote to change it), you'll be able to tell if it's an a MHE release, by looking for their logo, which is a stretched globe with the word Mondo written across it and a small white dog above it.
For example: http://www.amazon.it/Winx-Club-4/dp/B0041
Failing to find them all on Amazon, eBay has quite a few listed for sale, some complete series sets too. Lastly, season 3 is a bit of a problem, as the only time any DVD has had the English audio track on, was the ones given away free on the Pixie Mag magazine, and finding those DVDs anywhere is like finding gold dust in the Sahara desert. I hope this helps and doesn't confuse instead.

No, this information is going to be so helpful. thank you so much you are a legend :) Just one question: when you buy these dvds from this website (amazon.it) will it take money from your account the same as it would when you buy something on this site (amazon.co.uk) ?

Correct, it's the same as if you were on the .co.uk side, the only thing is, the order you place from .it (or any of the other Amazon sites) will only appear there and not in your .co.uk order history, but yes, it takes the money exactly the same.
The postage is a little more, though not that much (unless from a private seller), it only cost me £6 to get 2 DVDs from .de (Germany) and £6 again but for 3 DVDs from .it (Italy), so you shouldn't break the bank as long as you check who you're buying off.

Can you tell me anymore about why this is not worth getting? Why are there two versions of Winx? My daughter is 5 and likes Barbie and I'm looking into getting the series for her which is shown on Nickelodeon, is this the right one for that? It seams that you and others I've also read, say that there's another version of Winx (possibly from their own childhood) but since I'm not looking for that surely this'd be OK right? When you say they are edited do you mean compared to the old version and therefore the story is different to the original, or do you mean they are edited so that the story doesn't make sense? I suppose what I really want to know is - are these episodes the same as the ones broadcast today on Nick TV chanel?

There's the official Winx Club English translation of the original Italian language version, very professionally done, but then there's the one chopped up by 4Kids, ie the one I am reviewing here.
The 4Kids version, re-edited practically every episode, the terrific dialogue, intriguing stories etc, was changed into nothing but cheap laughs, that weren't that funny anyway. The life messages that the kids would have got and learned were completely erased. The beautiful musical score was also replaced with cheap 4Kids rock. Basically, it was hollow production and essentially a smack in the face of any kid who actually watched it. And yes, it made no sense either.
As for the Nickelodeon version, they're more like Flash specials, recently created so that Nick could get through much of the series in a matter of weeks, rather than months, so they could get onto season 5! Not all that great, a bit crammed, but entertaining none-the-less!

Ok that's really helpful thanks. So basically there's 3 versions , the original translated (I'm assuming that's dubed not sub titles?), then the 4Kids one which is this DVD, then there's the Nickelodoen TV series. I did think that one epsisode shown on Nick didn't seem to follow onto the next but I thought that wa just bad TV broadcasting! I should really check out the translated stuff then, I saw that you replied to another person and I wonder if you recommended a place to buy or what to look out for. I'll re-read what you said to them but if you've got any pointers of where to look or what specifically to search for that you didn't mention previously then I'd love to hear about it!
The only reason I was looking for the DVD was because Argos didn't have the Sky High Tink toy in stock so I bought a Winx doll with wings instead and figured we'd start watching the TV show before Christmas so she'd be interested in the doll. Since we started watching (the 2 episodes we've seen since my 1st message to you) she seamed interested, beautiful dolls, fairy's, good vs evil what's not to like? I love adult sci fi so I kida like it too and since our TV is usually on the kids chanel I'd like to enjoy it too!! Perhaps the original translated from Italian is the way to go...either that or I'll swap the toy to Sky High Tinkerbell!!!
Thanks so much for taking the trouble to reply.

No trouble at all. And by English translation of the original Italian language version, yes, I did mean dubbed, the DVDs I bought from Italy are dual language, Italian or English audio. However, you need to be a little cautious with the Italian DVDs, as there are three types available, the first, and one that you should concern with getting, are the ones released by Mondo Home Entertainment, as they do contain both the Italian and English audio, the other ones, not so! You'll be able to spot the MHE ones as their logo is a small dog on a globe. If you go to the first reply I made and check the links to amazon.it, you'll be able to see the ones I would recommend. You could also try evilBay aka eBay, though you may end up paying a bit of a price, but not always!

TV show lover says:
I am looking on Amazon.it and it is hard to find ones with English and it costs Euros but would it convert to $? I typed in the URL for the season 2 DVD but it doesn't say it is in English. I don't know what to do! It is so hard to find the right one. I would love if you responded! Thanks!

Annoyingly, the sets that contain the English dub are now becoming scarce on amazon.it and less of sellers who offer international postage (best give eBay a try). I can show you some of the ones that do contain the English (Inglese) dub, so that you can identify them from sight and enable you to find the sequential releases:
Complete season 2 set - http://www.amazon.it/WINX-CLUB-Serie-Comp
New release season 2 volume 01 - http://www.amazon.it/Winx-Club-Stagione-f
Old season 2 vol 01-03 set: http://www.amazon.it/Winx-Club-Stagione-v
Old season 2 vol 1 DVD release - http://www.amazon.it/Winx-Club-Stagione-f
Of the old season 2 release, there is a total of 26 episodes, on 9 DVDs, I haven't checked with the recent release, but I prefer the old release anyway, as they also did the season 1 release as well with the English dub, the new ones did not. If you hover over the bottom-right corner of the image for the old season 2 DVD, you'll see the logo for Mondo Home Entertainment... just look for that logo on the cover of the DVD and you'll know that it contains the English dub.
Also, rather than searching for winx club season 2, search for 'Winx Club Stagione 2'! As for the sets costing Euro's, no need to worry too much about that, as your bank will convert the Euro amount to pounds themselves.
Lastly, if you do find someone on amazon.it offering international post, just note that the first amount you see is for the domestic postage, you'll only get to see the correct international postage amount when you get to the order summary :(
