A 165, and still going strong,
This review is from: Jane Eyre (Penguin Classics) (Paperback)
When you think of it, it's somehow incredible that a book first published in 1847 could still be relevant in 2012. What changes has humankind not gone through in those 165 years? But set aside the language and vocabulary, and what's left is a truly timeless (and universal) tale, that deservedly continues and will continue to appeal. I need not summarize the plot here as many other reviewers have done so before me, but will only say (though many before me have done that as well) that this is a very gripping, powerful book with a language to match. In Thackeray's words, 'the masterwork of a great genius', and who am I doubt his judgement? This is most deservedly a classic, and the introduction by Steve Davies is excellent as well.

A wonderfully sympathetic BBC TV adaptation of Jane Eyre has been broadcast, done with actors beautifully resonant - none of whom I've ever heard of or seen before. I watched it last night. Marvellous.

Many thanks for the tip, I've recorded the movie and will certainly watch it in the near future. Even if it's only half as good as the book it must still be a very good movie!

I do hope you like this version of Jane Eyre, the titular heroine is a real find. She dominates the movie from within her composure and her understated acting skills. I stupidly deleted it by mistake so I can't go back and check on her name, but if you happen to notice her name, please let me know.

It's been frightfully busy here, but I hadn't forgotten about you and finally, a couple of days ago, managed to watch the BBC version. Indeed a splendid movie and lead actice, I think the name your looking for is Mia Wasikowska.
