First of all season 1 was great. The pathological nature of both lead characters was deftly handled and the pace of the story telling was just right. I also thought the opposing sides were treated intelligently with a good understanding of the complexity of the affairs. There were certainly psychopaths on both sides. The ending to season 1 was a little 'deus ex machina' for my liking.
Season 2 was good and had a good climax (but could have been better - more anon). Yes this is a story about intelligence operatives and so lying is par for the course. But by the end I'd just stopped carrying about who was lying to whom. My interest in the emotional baggage of the two lead characters had also waned - I just didn't find them in any way engaging any more. Actually, this is a credit to both leading actors who play their parts to perfection.
So at the end of Season 2 we have Brody heading off to Canada, no doubt to sign the contract for Seasons 3,4,5,6,... But I think they should have ended at Season 2. Closing scene: Brody shot and killed and all that is visible is the barrel of the gun that shot him. Two great conundrums: (a) who shot Brody? and (b) did Brody plant the bomb in his car? No pre-determined answers, we have to make our minds up. Now that would have been a way to guarantee that Homeland is near the top of 'every best of' for years to come.
