4.0 out of 5 stars Great, fun large group game., 1 Jan. 2013
This review is from: Cosmic Encounter (Toy)
So when you look at this game you might see nerd fest, with its name "Cosmic" encounter and the front cover with a creepy alien on the front so you might expect a big game with lot going on, a large playing board, lots chits and plastic pieces, and complicated rules and you will need a whole day to play play it.
Not true in any respect for CE, you do get lots of plastic pieces but their are all the same but different colours, you get a few little chits for the game, no big game board but some card board and a whole lot of cards.
Let explain the basics there is over a hundred alien races in the game, and before you say "oh no weird names that I can't say" wrong again, the names are like, winner, loser, anti-matter, clone, oracle.... The list goes on but each player gets to choose one from 2 randomly given to them and the race and it powers are explain very well to you. Then all players choose a colour and get 5 planets and 20 space ships and a victory point marker of the same colour. The players arrange their planets in any formation and place 4 ships on each, they receive 8 cards from a deck of cards, a piece of card board ( the warp) is placed in the centre of the table and you are ready to play.
Play begins by a player drawing a card what is called the destiny deck which will have cards of the colours of players in the game that person will be attacking that colour, he/she will place a pointer (hyper gate) at planet of that colour and place up to 4 ship on the hyper gate then the attacking play will ask for allies and so will the defender ask for help.
Other players not involved in the encounter can now aid either side and send ships to help with attack or defence, once allies are made the attacking player and defending play pick a card from their hand (hopefully with a high number on it) and play it face down until both are ready and then turn them over the player with higher value including the the number of ships wins.
if the defender wins he keeps his planet, his allies go home and all the attackers and allies ship go to the warp, Now if the attacker wins then that player and allies set up camp on that planet and score a point each and the defender and allies loss their ship to the wrap and the attacker gets to have a second encounter. And that's how the you win the game the player to claim 5 planets other then their own wins. Now there are other cards in your hand that you plays at points in the games to interrupt play and plans and the alien power can aid you or interrupt play as well.
Now played with right people it can be fun, exciting, and mind blowing, you will make allies and enemy's and then stab them in the back or they will at any point but also in this game can won by one player or many players. It will play in an hour to one and half hours. And last of all the rules book is easy to read and learn the game.
These are the Basic rules you can add more to it to make it more in depth and a lot more strategy to the play but with your first few games start green aliens and the basic rules I have talked about. This is why I rated it only 4 stars because how much rules needs to be taken in all at once, I tried it with my family and it took a while before they got the idea of how it works but they also still a little confused on some details so even basic rules you will need to play a few times.
But is still a great game and I enjoy play at home or in my club.
