WELCOME SLICE OF SIXTIES ORCHESTRAL NOSTALGIA,
This review is from: The Golden Age Of American Popular Music - Hits With Strings And Things (Audio CD)
The world of orchestral light music was once the staple diet of radio with recordings becoming very popular via old 78's before the introduction of the vinyl album gave even greater scope for themed mood music with Robert Farnon, Frank Chacksfield and Mantovani amongst those who held the baton in the UK. In the USA, Percy Faith, Nelson Riddle, Hugo Winterhalter and many others took time off from accompanying star vocalists in order to record and promote their own highly collectable albums. Most adapted to the changing world of Sixties music with orchestral singles extracted from albums enjoying high-profile sales and often Chart success.
This compilation of twenty-eight tracks in excellent sound widens the range with a delightful array of orchestral magic favoured by record buyers in the States and sometimes the UK. It's a real joy to have so many instrumental hits on one CD. For a start LOVE IS BLUE, THEME FROM A SUMMER PLACE, CANADIAN SUNSET, CALCUTTA and STRANGER ON THE SHORE by Paul Mauriat, Percy Faith, Hugo Winterhalter, Lawrence Welk and Acker Bilk respectively were all US Chart Toppers which have stood the test of time. However, the inclusion of Joe Harnell's FLY ME TO THE MOON, Horst Jankowski's WALK IN THE BLACK FOREST, Mancini's MOON RIVER and MUSIC TO WATCH GIRLS BY with The Bob Crewe Generation also confirm the popularity and strength of such music as well as adding even more orchestral gloss to this compilation.
Such a rich presentation of Sixties instrumental memorabilia and covering notes offering variations on Dixieland, Mexican sound, bossa-nova and blues, plus wild sax, swinging organ and numerous other orchestral confections pleases the ear and warms the heart.
