This review is from: Cote D'or: A Celebration Of The Great Wines Of Burgundy (Hardcover)
This is without a doubt THE book for the English reader interested in Burgundy. Coates is inexhaustibly knowledgeable and comprehensive. The level of detail goes right down to individual lieux dits, and covers the vast majority of the producers that are worth bothering with. The only slight drawback is that the edition needs to be updated to include recent vintages that are now bottled.
The notes on the vintages up until 2003 (that Coates had tasted in bottle) are simply incredible. He modestly argues for presenting individual tasting notes for wines rather than attempting too much generalization. Like the rest of this book, this approach to vintage leads to a level of very fine detail, which might not appeal to readers who are not (yet!) as passionate about the Cote d'Or as Coates himself, but for anyone who has caught the bug, this book is unmissable.
