Remote Controllable USB Switch,
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: StarTech.com 4-to-1 USB 2.0 Peripheral Sharing Switch (Personal Computers)
Yet again StarTech score the points. These days I barely look at other USB device suppliers, StarTech always seem to get the points.
This device is 4 inches long, and allows the user to hook up USB peripherals to more than one computer. the computers can then request use of the peripherals, and it will switch the control between the two. The switch can be controlled by software supplied with the control, or by the button on the top. this makes it ideal for remote use. The descriptions never seem to mention that you could choose to put a USB hub on the switch, and share many peripherals between the computers. This does work, I've tried it. I would ensure you use a USB hub with a power source though, seems a tough ask to expect the switch to support it all.
My only gripe is that when you request control of the USB devices from the passive machine, it doesn't put up any form of warning on the currently controlling machine. I would have liked a 5 second timeout on a Yes/No window. Maybe someone is requesting use of kit I'm in the process of using! Likewise I would have liked to see the option to lock the switch for x minutes, so if I'm using the disk drive that's attached I could set a lock for 1 hour and then the process could complete before anyone was allowed access. This could be fed back to the requesting machine, not available for x minutes, etc. Alas it DOES NOT DO THIS. So it's got some rather tedious limitations on that side.
However, it does the job and I do like it. It's solidly built. Light enough to Velcro on my machine.
Could easily do better, but very good.
