Forest reigns . . .,
This review is from: The Last King Of Scotland [DVD] (DVD)
Awesome movie, for real film fans and those old enough to remember the 70s and the events of that mad decade.
Forest Whitaker is huge here (in more ways than one) and steals the show as the charismatic, humurous, evil, generous and unpredictable Idi Amin. His presence on screen is immense and well deserving of his Oscar. James McAvoy is also excellent as the naive Scottish doctor, seduced by Amins' charm and overbearing personality, not knowing the horrors ahead of him. The scenery, cast, script and screenplay in this film are excellent and all combine to make it a moving experience.
This is not a great date movie; Amin's sadistic whims are graphically portrayed later on but it was what he did and the film would be remiss if it did not show it. (Good advice - if you ever become a sadistic dictator's physician, do not, I repeat do not cop off with the mother of his child. It will surely end in tears...)
