As good as any of his previous albums (and better than a few of them),
This review is from: Morning, Noon And Night (Audio CD)
You might reasonably think that at the age of 63 (when he recorded this in 2002) veteran Bob James would be running out of musical puff but he most certainly wasn't, as nearly all of this album is just great.
Stylistically, I suppose it falls somewhere between Playin' Hooky the funky-edged Joy Ride, recorded in and around LA and NY with all sorts of absolutely top class musicians such as Vinnie Coliauta (drums), Chuck Loeb & Paul Brown (guitar), Will Lee & James Genus (bass), Dave Koz & Dave Mann (sax), Paulinho Da Costa (percussion), Rick Braun (trumpet) and various other lesser known but no less quality folk. Bob James either wrote or co-wrote several tracks, with Chuck Loeb, Paul Brown (who also produced a few) and various others lending their writing talents also.
All in all, except for just a couple of tracks (including the inevitable vocal duffer, this one featuring daughter Hilary), this is a first class album and well worth adding to your collection. How he still does it after all these years is something of a marvel ~ a real talent who's never flagged and who continues to move most satisfactorily with the ever-changing times. Strongly recommended.
