This review is from: English Interactive Picture Dictionary (French, Italian, German, Spanish) (CD-ROM)
This is an interesting tool to create your essential vocabulary by means of audiofiles, pictures and videoclips, words and phrases, games and printable worksheets.
IMPORTANT: You must have the CD-Rom in the drive to use it.
When you use the VOCABULARY, you are asked to choose between the FOUR available languages. This could be a little problem, for it is not specified which is the main language of the software. I got mine which has French as a root language, whereas a friend of mine got English as a root language. This means that the main functions are explained in the root language, and when you use the dictionary, you get the written translations of the words and phrases in this language. Anyway, this is not a big problem. I can choose among Italian, English, Spanish and German. On the right side of the window it appears a list of terms, from A to Z, and these thousands of words can also be divided into topics, such as "food and drink", "home", "leisure", "medical", "nature", "people", "travel", "places" and "work". You click on a word and you listen to a native speaker's voice, on the left side of the window it appears a picture or a videoclip - the short videoclips usually accompany the verbs - under the picture you get its translation into the root language, or a phrase and its translation into the root language. You can imitate the speaker and record your own voice in order to compare it with the model.
Then you have the GAMES, divided into three levels of interactive quiz to help you memorize new words in no time (level from easy to difficult). You have to be very fast with the mouse to finish them, and they are nice.
Finally, you have the printable worksheets, up to 85 per language and vocabulary lists. You can print both the vocabulary and the games.
Why only four stars and not full marks? The root language does not have the audiofiles, but just the written words. If the user could really change among ALL FIVE languages, this could be a real improvement of the software.
