Innovative but expensive,
The Nest Protect is perhaps the biggest innovation in home safety in recent years. Replacing a wireless First Alert system it offers many advantages.
Firstly, all the units talk to each other - not just to a central handset. It appears this also works if your WiFi network is unavailable such as a fire in the room with your router through a device to device network it establishes. It will talk to you and tell you what the danger is and where it is allowing you to plan your exit from the building. If an alarm is silenced (which has to be done within the room it occurred), all the other alarms are silenced unlike on the First Alert where the handsets in our bedrooms also needed to be removed from the bases.
With the app, you know about danger whilst the house is empty. Whether you are on holiday or just at work with a pet at home it gives you an opportunity to investigate and get emergency help to the building quickly. It works fantastically if you have a wireless camera (e.g. Foscam) in the room. This would be a feature I'd like to see in the next version of the Nest so you can remotely check an image - with the motion sensor they have a whole house alarm if it was implemented.
The units also provide a nice glow when you walk underneath them and are an ideal way to illuminate a path at night. This can be turned off (e.g. in a bedroom).
The major downside is the price - if you want at least one per floor and one in any room with a gas burning appliance then you probably have 3 or 4 to purchase. For full utility to identify rooms with a problem, you may want one in each room of the house. With only a 7 year lifespan and no way to swap out the sensors when they expire this could be a very expensive investment where normal smoke alarms also provide a good level of safety. In the UK, as the Nest Thermostat isn't available you also lose the functionality to turn off the heating if Carbon Monoxide is detected.
If you can afford it, this is a great product but its new on the market and it may be better to wait for the next release or for a multipack discount to become available.
