A new England?,
This review is from: The Progressive Patriot: A Search for Belonging (Hardcover)
In what is part autobiography, part political polemic, Billy Bragg takes his own (fascinating) family history as a starting point for a study of his own sense of identity and belonging, celebrating diversity and his own part within that, and to call for social cohesion and tolerance.
While the force of the polemic is all the more vivid for the introduction of Billy Bragg's personal story and how it shaped his own perspective, this is not just another entry in the recent trend of celebrities investigating their roots and ancestry. Billy Bragg clearly feels a visceral link with his ancestors, where they came from and how they lived.
This well-written book did leave me wondering what the upward trend in genealogical research says about us as a society; is the urge for an identity to hold onto all the greater in times of social and political uncertainty?
