The most delightful of children's stories,
This review is from: PEDRO AND THE LITTLE ENGINE (Hardcover)
Occasionally a story goes out of print and one looks on in disbelief and asks: "How can this be so!"
Pedro and the Little Engine is one such story. It has everything. Adventure, humour and a delicious ending. I have no doubt that if it were re-issued today it would be an instant bestseller. Come on, Hodder, don't allow this quaint, innocent little tale to be lost. You will be doing a service to Humanity bringing it back
THE STORY IS AS FOLLOWS:
Pedro - an inquisitive little donkey - decides to explore the woods beyond his enclosure one hot, sunny afternoon. He comes across an old engine. But looking too closely at it, his nose makes contact with a lever and sets the engine running. Now the adventure really gets going. How is Pedro to stop the engine? Scared, nervous and without knowing what he should do he chases after it. He chases it over a high bridge. When it comes off the track he keeps on after it. It charges then into a field. Pedro gets hold of a red flag in his mouth and waves the flag at the train thinking THIS will make it stop. A bull then, seeing Pedro waving his flag, chases after PEDRO! The engine finally ends up in a pond. But Pedro, using his smart little head, pulls off a plate from the locomotive with the engine's name on. He takes the plate back to the place where he originally found the engine. The engine-owner sees his engine's name in Pedro's mouth. And after a long trek Pedro shows the man where his engine ended up. The engine owner is jubilant and treats Pedro like a lord for finding his treasured train. What a lovely story - and brought to life by the delightful illustrations!
