Brilliant read... gripping Dom Rep thriller,
This review is from: The Feast of the Goat (Paperback)
This novel about Rafael Trujillo's rule and ultimate demise is the best modern book I've read in 2012. His characterisation is superb - you get a real insight into the arrogant-paranoid world of Trujillo (with his creaseless suits, growing incontinence problem, and sick taste for little girls), as well as other grotesques such as Johnny Abbes (head of internal security and a veritable psychopath, with his red hankerchief and interest in weird Rosicrucian doctrines), and the "Consitutional Sot" and the "Walking Turd" - nicknames of other unpleasant Trujallistas.
The story of a young woman who gets caught up in the horrors of the regime is neatly woven in with the plot to assassinate Trujillo. The brave men who risked their lives to rid the Dominican Republic of Trujillo are truly to be admired (and the subsequent treatment of some at the hands of Trujillo's son is appalling).
I did not know much about Trujillo, but do now. The Feast of the Goat ('The Goat' is Trujillo's nickname) is an instant classic. Bravo to Mario Vargas Llosa.
