Fun but not the best on the series,
This review is from: SSX (Xbox 360) (Video Game)
The SSX series has been around for some time now and this is the latest incarnation. With any SSX game there will always be comparisons with SSX Tricky, one of the best games released on the last generation of consoles. That was a game that was simple and extremely effective - any sequels have tried to add to the mix and lost the simplicity. Here a lot is paired back, even more added and what we are left with is a fun game with an effective online expereince. But it lacks the simple enjoyment of Tricky.
The premise of the game in world tour is simple - you are in control of team SSX and are trying to take on the 9 deadly descents ahead of Griff's team. Yes that's right there is a storyline here with cut-scenes of comic book intro's to characters. This might be a nice idea but it really comes across as confused and totally unnecessary. There is also an Explore mode where any of the peaks are open and online modes. The online mode includes races, tricks etc against other opponents. Each event is open for a period of time so you don't always get the instant gratification of winning. There is no offline multiplayer (why? This would be simplicity itself to implement and should be there).
The controls are easy to get used to, although the tutorial didn't really give me enough time to play with the controls. The graphics are improved. But SSX always has been about the gameplay. This is where SSX almost gets it bang on. The diffierent challenges are challenging and the addition of oxygen packs and wing suits adds enough variety to the mix. Its got the 'one more go' feel when you don't quite succeed. It fun to play and whilst not as much fun as Tricky it keeps you involved. However, the sound mix isn't quite there. Play a race and you will hear lots of talking from you and your opponents. But you never quite know who is who. This doesn't give you the feeling of total control you should have and distances you a little from what's going on. The music is as good as ever and Run DMC are there as usual.
SSX is a fun game. Its a leap forward for a series which for too long has been in the shadows of one of its iterations (Tricky - yes I keep mentioning it but it overshadows every other SSX game). But the lack of multiplayer offline and some small niggles mean its not quite as good as it should be. However, too many games these days are not fun...this one is and should be applauded for that.

No idea why others found your review not helpful. Spot on, I reckon. Tricky really is the most fun SSX game (I played them on lots of different consoles) and it's the reason I kept my PS2. Plus Run DMC's eponymous track just doesn't punch hard enough in this remix.
However, I still love it. I think there's greater depth here than Tricky but less fun.

A. Burton says:
People haven't found it helpful because Tricky was not the best game in the series, it was the worst. It was too simple, max your tricky bar in the first 20 seconds and boost to the end. The end.
