5.0 out of 5 stars Good printer, great ADF scanner, 25 Jun. 2011
This review is from: Canon PIXMA MX885 All-In-One Colour Photo Print (Print, Copy, Scan, Fax) (Personal Computers)
This printer replaced a Canon IP4000r that seemed to last forever, only being replaced because the switch confirming that the paper-out door was open had failed.
We choose this printer because it has an automatic document feed (ADF) for the scanner. The ADF also does automatic double-sided scanning.

The printer is very easy to set up - the warnings about installing the print head are scarier in the reading than in achieving the actual task. The WIFI setup was automatic with a Dell running Windows 7.

The print function is fast and of excellent quality (I print cropped A4 pictures from a Canon 5DII). The printer can be away from the PC as the paper output door opens automatically when printing!

I save the best to last. The ADF scanner function is great! Previously I used a Canon flatbed scanner and to scan a magazine would take perhaps an hour with attention required every minute or so and thus the magazines piled up.

I have scanned many magazines in the few weeks that I have had this scanner and it has been so easy. The supplied software allows PDF documents to be constructed from the scanned pages so a complete magazine (separated into individual pages) could be loaded and the articles saved independently. The software is very easy to use. The only issue is that the output tray for the ADF is a little on the small side and can clog stopping the scanner working. Solution: scan a few less pages or remove the pages as the scan progresses.

I have not spoken much about the printing as the same excellent Canon quality can be achieved with cheaper printers. We bought this because of the ADF double-sided scanner and that works better than expected and is well worth the extra money and space that this printer requires.

Hi

I've bought the HP Officejet Pro 8500+ for £140 after a £60 cash back as my main requirements are both duplex scanning and duplex printing. I have an old canon MFP 730 with ADF since 2002, its a great product. Can you please confirm to me (because I might return the HP):

1. How fast can it scan 5 pages of A4 (black/mono) both single and double sided @ 300 dpi (default option)
2. And also the same 5 pages in colour mode single and double sided@ 300 dpi
3. When you do duplex printing, after it prints the one side, is there a delay before it pulls back the paper to print on the second side? I am told the HP does this to let the ink dry but to print 10 pages double sided took rediculously long (over 5 minutes) and I tend to do quick (print and dash) runs

4. Is there a function to PDF scan directly to USB stick, or email from the LCD without having to connect to the computer or have the computer on (the HP can do this)

5. How is the paper pick up on the scanning ADF? My old canon seems to like picking up 2-3 pages at a time because these days a lot of people use recycled paper to its very dry and not easy to grip.

6. Like HP, is there an ePrint function, where anyone can send a document to a special email address and it goes directly through to the printer (as if it were a fax)?

Thanks very much.

Also looking to replace a HP Officejet Pro 8500, which has to be one of the worst printers ever. HP not what they were. Just replaced both printheads and all cartridges to cure bad print quality. Failed. For the head/cartridge costs could have bought one of these Canons. Ah well, live and learn. Thanks for the review, it's helped the decision
