This review is from: Drobo DR04DD30 4-Bay FireWire 800/USB 2.0 DAS Enclosure (Personal Computers)
I've had my Drobo for almost a year now & have found that it performs well when connected to my Mac using Firewire. Data access is fast, and the unit is simplicity itself to use. Although the info says that it'll accept a SATA drive from any manufacturer, beware as not all do work reliably (especially the larger 1.5TB & greater drives. Best to double check with the Drobo website to see their recommendations before buying, or be safe & buy Western Digital. Maxtor, Seagate, or Samsung drives. Eco drives seem to work fine.
If you're looking for a fast network solution, avoid the Drobo Share at all costs. Even though it's fitted with a GigaBit port, it's painfully slow, and as the Drobo connects to the Space by USB, there's a bottleneck right away. I have a Drobo Space, but found that trying to stream video & music to 2 different clients was too much for it, so instead have the Drobo connected to a Mac Mini on my home network. The Mac stays on all the time & deals with the network sharing duties.
So, in summary these are good drives that are easy to use. The price is quite steep when compared to some other similar products, but if you want something that's simple to use & administer, then this is it.
