Hawai`i is the star.,
This review is from: Magnum Pi: the Complete First Season [DVD] (DVD)
"Magnum p.i" was a fantastic t.v series. The main characters were all excellent (Magnum, Higgins and even "the lads".)
The story lines of most episodes were very good. The lighter hearted episodes being the best.
But overall the star was Hawai`i itself.
Although there was a lot of scenes filmed on O`ahu, especially around Waikiki and Honolulu. The main filming was done on Kaua`i. This is where the "Robin Masters estate" really was.
The show was totally unrealistic in many ways. Especially the fact that it was packed full of English characters.
When in fact in the Hawai`ian Islands in the 1980`s when it was filmed (I know because I was there) an English person living even on O`ahu was an extreme rarity. If anyone found out you were English then Hawai`ians, Americans and Japanese all treated you like royalty. You were such a novelty.! The only English people they had seen in Hawai`i was Joan Collins in the "Dynasty" t.v show. So to have so many English characters especially as the seasons went on packed into the series was absurd.
But who cares about reality. None of the story lines were that realistic either.
It was still an amusing, fun, action packed show.
For such an iconic t.v series the dvd box set does deserve a lot better than "Universal" the cheapskate of all studios gave it.
The discs are double sided until later seasons.
And you have to buy the U.S ntsc region 1 box sets of the show for the outside box covers to co-ordinate throughout all the seasons.
Worst of all is the quality of the picture. Which varies from episode to episode. Some being quite good then others very poor and grainy.
And not one single extra in any season.
They obviouisly spent as little money as possible on the production and manufacturing of these box sets.
But what they have released is better than nothing. So if this is the only watch to watch "Magnum p.i" again
then they are worth buying.
