This review is from: The Tortoise And The Hare (VMC) (Paperback)
Like the other reviewers, I found this painful reading, but was astonished at how we were invited by the author to empathise with the Other Woman, who is behaving with abominable cruelty and high-handedness. Elizabeth Jenkins also does this in Harriet, where we are brought (terrifyingly) into the thought-processes and world-view of four people who rob, abuse and murder a defenceless, mentally-handicapped woman. Imogen isn't anything like as badly treated as poor Harriet, but she is gradually deprived of all her rights, even the basic one of being able to have the most basic physical contact with her husband in public. I thought the boy Tim was a lovely and believable character in the novel, and found the author's lack of sentimentality about the mother-son bond very refreshing. Gavin was developing into an odious little brute and a bully at school, although there was a rather touching little plea in one confrontation, when the boy wrote 'I am not beastly' on a bit of paper. By the way, did anybody else think it odd that Imogen was kissing Hunter repeatedly when they were on a walk - and we were left in no doubt that this was not just kissing on the cheek? Was this common behaviour for 1950s upper-middle class wives and their husbands' friends?
