Overrated, poor WiFi range,
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Billion BiPAC 7800DXL Triple WAN Dual Band Wireless N Gigabit ADSL2+/Fibre 3G/4G LTE Broadband Router with USB Port (Accessory)
I expected the 7800DXL to solve my poor WiFi signal issues around the extremities of my 5 bed home. In actual fact the 2.4GHz signal was no better than my BT Hub 3, and may in fact have been slightly worse. The 5GHz range was even lower as yo be expected, but interestingly not that much worse than the 2.4GHz range. With the Billion, my 2.4GHz Wifi dropped out on my phone in my kitchen when it just managed to hang on with the BT Hub 3. Out of the box, the connection speed (DSL) was 9727Mbps, which was identical to the home hub, so no improvement there either!
Yes you may be able to play around with the signal/noise ratio and risk DSL dropouts, but many locations like mine see much worse signal to noise at night, so this may not be that sensible. Remember that frequent DSL dropouts will make the exchange lower your line speed.
The Billion 7800DXL is full of menus with options which make little sense to me and I am technical. There are small question marks near the options which pertain to explain what they do, but actually just serve to confuse more. This is a router for an experienced network engineer. It is a waste of time for a home user and certainly not any use in a bigger home that needs good WiFi range.
I have now solved my WIFi range problem with a Tenda W150M extender. This £20 box works as a simple WiFi repeater, receives the BT Hub and repeats it. No need for horrible Powerline Extenders which cause interference over the whole neighbourhood.
