My wife is a maths teacher. I am not. I'm technical but not mathematical and to be honest for me maths is a practical pursuit rather than one done for fun. My wife on the other hand loves sees the beauty in mathematics so I decided to read this book to see if I could relate.
Answer, yes and no. This book gives the history of mathematics and cites the discoveries of mathematicians gone by in an interesting and entertaining way. I note the leading reviewer pointing out the innacuracies in the text. I plain didn't see them but at the same time I didn't think too deeply as I read. I grasped the basic concepts and moved on. But I never expected to become an instant expert in all forms of maths so that's ok. It is an entertaining book, well written and in a chatty accessible style. Is it dumbed down? Possibly but not to extremes so I recommend it for entertainment.
