Excellent but grim introduction to former Yugoslavia,
This review is from: The Death of Yugoslavia (BBC) (Paperback)
An excellent, easy to read and very balanced text on the breakup of Yugoslavia. It is difficult not to take sides when writing about the bloody and turbulent period of the Yugoslav history in 1991-1996 but the authors, by and large, manage to avoid partisanship. Importantly, this book also describes the background of the Yugoslav conflict, with historic and economic digressions going several decades back to explain the sources of the conflict. The book may serve as a very informative albeit somewhat grim introduction into former Yugoslavia before and during its dissolution. What a land it was!

I've just come across this book (not yet bought it) while looking for a DVD of the original BBC series. Does such a thing exist? I taped all of them when they first aired, and it gave me an invaluable insight into what what going on, but sadly technology and the need to declutter meant that I had to throw the tapes away.
