Disapointing for the X-Com fan,
This review is from: UFO: Aftershock (PC DVD) (Video Game)
I really wanted to like this game, having been a big fan of the original X-Com series. I had played Aftermath but felt that it was a bit of a step back in terms of the research element, so when I started playing this game I was pleased to see it's reappearance. You can research and build various items and train your characters in various skills to help you in your fight against the aliens.
In the early parts of the game I was convinced that this was going to be a 5 star game but as it carried on it slid down the scale. The reasons for this are mainly
(i) the repetitive nature of the tactical missions of the game which although short and punchy are a little too much of the same. It is a little too easy to rely on just a very limited selection of character types to get through every encounter and some weapons are a little overpowered in later stages of the game.
(ii) the speed of the storyline is governed by the research time of your main lab which you have no control over. Later on in the game you can easily find yourself with the game speed turned right up for long periods waiting for something to happen.
All in all it is disappointing to see that the game at best does not appear to have moved on since the last of the X-Com series and at worst has gone backwards in that time.
