This review is from: Essential Spider-Man Vol.10 (Paperback)The tales collected here first saw the light of day around 30 years ago, 1980-1982.
The opener is a stand out tale with Spidey battling the Sub-Mariner aboard a research vessel in a tale that saw the birth of the sole new villain here Hydro-Man.
There's plenty of blasts from the past here starting with The Wizard and the Frightful Four (guest starring Sub-Mariner again), also from deep in the Marvel archives the Sand-Man who joins with Hydro-Man in a tale that echoes that of King Kong; the Grey Gargoyle, Red Ghost and his Super-Apes, Dr Octopus (featuring The Punisher) and the young at heart Vulture as well as Ramrod and Speed-Demon (once The Whizzer) and the truly odd Foolkiler, as well as a guest shot from Moon Knignt.
The closer is a great 2 part tale involving the relentless Juggernaut.
The pretty high standard is helped by the scripting by Denny O'Neil and Roger Stern who don't forget the wealth of regular background characters developed over time, including the return of Betty Brant-Leeds and Peter Parker's irregular relationship with Debra Whitman then to complete the mix Felicia Hardy, the Black Cat returns. Not forgetting the song-writing skills of Lonesome Pinky.
The consistency is also helped by the artwork, especually due to a series of long runs by John Romita Jr.
Whilst nowhere near the best of the Essentials collections it was a great read and they will continue to be regular purchases.
