A look back,
This review is from: First Overland: London-Singapore by Land Rover (Paperback)
Its when you read books from this era you realise how publishing and writing styles have evolved. Its so classical in its narrative it gives a beautiful perspective on the values of both the young men involved and the socio/economic/political structure of the countries they passed through. For this reason it was actually a very entertaining read.
I actually bought the book as I am interested in classic land rovers and I like the idea of self contained travel - I wanted to learn about overlanding. How much of the content turned out to be relevent to me isn't so important now I have read it. Despite having a camera with them and sending back film rolls to the UK, precious few images found their way into the book which is a shame as it would have been wonderful to see some of the things that Tim described in such detail.
I gather that a repeat of this trip is being planned to follow in these brave young men's tyre tracks, I hope that happens and I hope a book gets written as comparing the two stories will be time well spent
