I have long admired Max Hastings and regard him as Britain's foremost military historian. But in Catastrophe he has excelled himself with this compelling account of the run-up to the outbreak of the First World War and the months that followed. The popular perception of WW1 is of trench warfare and that, of course, is correct. But in the opening weeks of the campaign many generals (particularly the French) appeared to believe it was a rerun of the Franco-Prussian war, complete with colourful uniforms, flags and swords. What Hastings has done here, through meticulous research and contemporary accounts, is to catch the very essence of those mad few months in which the world changed forever.
