Patrick Hawes - Blue in Blue,
This review is from: Hawes - Blue in Blue (Audio CD)I was first introduced to this CD by a friend at uni, and it is now my 'most-listened-to' CD. With the way a lot of contemporary music is moving, it is so refreshing to hear music that is so beautifully tonal, and which creates a calming atmosphere as soon as it is put on. From the opening calls of the soprano in Quanta Qualia, to the closing moments of the last Bluebird variation, the composer's colourful orchestration leaves the listener in awe. One is so relaxed as to be almost in a dream world, with the sense of the might and majesty of nature, which one feels is expressed by the spaciousness in Hawes' textures and harmonies.
The orchestra and singers do a fine job conveying the power of this music to the listener, and the soprano soloist (Quanta Qualia and the Bluebird) and tenor soloist (O Waly Waly) really are the icing and cherry on the cake to what will hopefully become a modern classic, and a CD that every classical music fan should own.
