A great Europe compilation!,
This review is from: Europe 1982-2000 (Audio CD)
'1982-2000' is an updated version of Europe's first official greatest hits album released in 1992, containing only one new track: 'The Final Countdown 2000' which was a top 40 hit in the UK around that time (2000). It's a remix of the band's biggest hit, If you like dance music, you'll probably enjoy it more than me.
I bought this album years ago, I was only familiar with their biggest hit 'The Final Countdown' and rather liked it (I was still very young and just becoming a fan of rock music). I soon began to appreciate their other hits and album highlights featured on this CD.
In chronological order, this compilation features 18 tracks, spanning their career at the time, in which they had a released five studio albums. They started off as a much heavier rock band than they began during her commercial peak. The first two tracks (taken from their 1983 duet album) are some of the strongest: ''In The Future To Come'' and ''Seven Doors Hotel''. Four tracks from their second album ''Wings Of Tomorrow'' are also included, my favourite being the ballad ''Dreamer''. Most people will be familiar with the next four songs: ''Countdown'', ''Rock The Night'', ''Carrie'' and ''Cherokee'', all big hits in 1986.
After the huge success of 'The Final Countdown' album and the four singles, Europe released an even better album two years later with the top 20 hit 'Out Of This World', in which they had further success with the singles ''Superstitious'' and ''Ready Or Not''.
In 1991, they released their best album (in my opinion), ''Prisoners In Paradise'', containing the amazing title track and ''I'll Cry For You'' (the acoustic version is presented here). This was to be their last release until 2004's ''Start From The Dark'', and a further three acclaimed and successful albums have followed (with the heavy rock sound that they started off with.) This compilation also contains ''Sweet Love Child'' and ''Yesterday's News'', which had previously been unreleased.
'1982-2000' is a great introduction to Europe's early work. It was the CD that first made me a fan, and comes with a comprehensive booklet featuring comments by vocalist and main songwriter Joey Tempest on each of the songs, pictures, and a year by year summary of their career.
