Good but incomplete and with missing passages,
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Way of a Pilgrim (Paperback)
This particular translation by Nina A. Toumanova is all right but: be warned! This edition is not the complete book. Even the part of the book that is supposed to be there is not complete.
The book "The Way of the Pilgrim" comes in two parts. The first part is sometimes marketed under the title "The Way of the Pilgrim" and this is the part this particular edition purports to be, but it isn't. I have found at least three passages of a particular episode (in section IV of the book) were omitted - for no apparent reason... between pages 54-55 there is gap. No, no pages are missing. It seems that these `scenes' of the story were omitted from this publication. I compared the text with a copy of the original Russian text, plus the Greek and another English translation and both have more there...
For the record: The second part is also sometimes marketed alone titled: "The Pilgrim Continues his Way." The manuscript for this part was found attached to the original Russian manuscript of the first part as a postscript, and that is that it is considered a `sequel,.' But it is clear that from the beginning the book was found in its manuscript form as a two-part work, a main part and a sequel already attached to it.
The best editions are the ones, which contain both parts, as they should. But (apparently for marketing and profit reasons) sometimes - especially in the English-speaking markets - the each part is sold as a stand-alone book.
If you want to read "The Way of a Pilgrim" please make sure you buy a book marketed under the title "The Way of a Pilgrim & The Pilgrim continues His Way" as this will contain both parts. Buying this incomplete edition makes sense only if one already owns the full book and just wants to look into a different translation for study purposes.
