Overplayed and overhyped,
This review is from: 21 (Audio CD)
So this CD has sold millions and is even number one in America. So that means it must be fantastic right? No, it is way overplayed and the hype is spiralling out of control. Adele has got an OK voice and her songs are average at best but it is trendy now to use her songs as backing music for documentaries, X-Factor type shows and countless other things. One year it's Dido, then Duffy, then Lily Allen. I suppose it's now the turn of Adele and I genuinely can't see why they are making her out to be the best thing since sliced bread. This isn't a great CD at all and most of the stuff here is forgettable.
I caught her on a chat show last night. Foul mouthed, cocky and a little big headed. Not for me this girl I'm afraid. I just haven't swallowed the hype. As for the song that seems to make many misty eyed, 'Someone Like You', yes, it starts off OK but then goes on....and on...and on with Adele's vocals struggling at times to hit the right notes. I really can't see why so many people rave about it.
UPDATE; A couple of months later and still this CD has gone back to number one. Programme makers still can't think of anything else to use as a backing soundtrack other than Adele and she is still being way overhyped which isn't her fault I suppose. Also, 'Set Fire To The Rain' is actually pretty good so long as they don't over play the track so I have added one star.
FURTHER UPDATE; Adele is still getting played way too much and I now can't stand 'Set Fire To The Rain'. Her voice goes right through me on this track. Yes, the UK & US markets have gone absolutely bonkers on her but really, is she THAT good? I think it is her size that contributes to the hype. 'Oh, she is so different', 'What a relief to have someone that can sing, regardless of how she looks', 'Isn't it great to judge someone purely on talent?'. Adele can sing, she can write her own songs and that is to her credit. Really though, her voice is alright but the hype has reached ridiculous proportions now. She seems to me to almost run out of breath at times when she sings but I know and accept that very many of you will dismiss this review as waffle. So be it.
