4.0 out of 5 stars Dishwashing for Eco-warriors, 27 Jun 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Automatic Dishwasher Gel, Free & Clear, Fragrance-Free Formula, 42 fl oz (2.62 lbs)
This dishwasher gel seems to work reasonably well even in a hard water area. Not too many white stains etc., although it is fairly expensive.

It is supposedly perfume free; and I purchased it because I am fed up with every household-cleaning and personal-hygeine product I buy leaving me gasping for air.

It seems that all the adverts will tell you that their product leaves your clothes, dishes, underarms, or hearth rug smelling minty fresh and alpine clean. It DOESN'T! It leaves them smelling of perfume - a completely unnecessary chemical additive included in the formulation simply to make the product more appealing to the gullible. If the item in question was truly clean it would smell of nothing but itself.

Anyway, this particular product is reasonably scent-free. I could, however, have done without the New-Age eco-warrior hippy-trippy clap-trap on the packaging, which seems to be aimed squarely at a different type of gullible. Why must we turn to this type of "specialist" manufacturer for something so basic? Is it too much to ask the UK's mainstream manufacturers to release a few un-scented variants of their products?

The reason for manufacturers adding "nice smell" is not to make the products smell nice. (Also, lets face it, they don't). It is to cover the much worse chemical smell we would have had the pleasure to enjoy otherwise. Although personally, I don't know what's worse.

Dr K James says:
I suppose it depends what the product is. Some are more pungent than others. Whatever it is though I'd rather have to put up with the smell of just the product rather than product-plus-perfume.

Unfortunately some supposedly perfume-free products do smell of scent - Surcare Sensitive washing powder for one. Some boxes of it aren't too strong but others reek of scent. Maybe its down to poor quality control.

However, I have now used three bottles of the Free and Clear dishwasher gel and, so far, all of them have lived up to their fragrance-free labelling
