Best Snowman Film Yeti!,
This review is from: Snow Beast (DVD)
Ok, perhaps not. The best is probably Hammer's "The Abominable Snowman", but anyway;
Poor John Schneider [from THE DUKES OF HAZZARD on TV]! What happened to his career? He's becoming a common sight in bargain creature-feature movies, mostly made for TV. He's in SUPERSHARK, SHARK SWARM, LAKE PLACID 2, OGRE and here he's playing the lead role in SNOWBEAST, a kind-of remake of the slow 70s version. Shneider is one of several scientists who are investigating lynx numbers in a Canadian ski-resort, and encounter a SNOWBEAST who is very efficiently swiping people off the ski-slopes and taking them to his icy larder to put them on ice for his supper. Shneider gets kidnapped by the creature, and his daughter has to try and rescue him.
Surprise; this is actually quite a reasonable film, of its type. Ok, it's not original, and follows the standard creature-feature template; it has flaws, and its never gonna win any Oscars or such, but it IS entertaining.
The creature itself is a bloke in a fancy-dress-shop yeti suit, and is really quite ropey and is never going to frighten anything more than small children. However, in my opinion it is better than cheap CGI and for a change we get to see quite a lot of the monster, and a decent script and cast make one or two scenes moderately tense.
With a bit more money behind the creature effects this could have been a mid-list cinema monster flick, like LAKE PLACID, ANACONDA, etc. but as it is, if you can get past the [very clean] monster suit, you can enjoy this fun film with young teens or your granny.
For monster fans its certainly worth £1.29 [1p with postage], but I got this in a triple disc set with MONSTERWOLF and SWAMP SHARK; twas about two quid but saves on individual postage, and I was thoroughly happy with my purchase!
