This review is from: Jimmy Carr: Live Collection [DVD] (DVD)
It takes much talent and a lot of practice to be noticed in the stand up industry. Jimmy Carr is obviously loaded with both.
One of the mainly intriguing things about Jimmy Carr is his unscrupulousness and general disregard for any social conventions. No subject is untouchable to him, he can make jokes about any of the most sensitive topics. Still, no matter what topic he picks on (or whoever he picks on :) ), he manages to avoid descending to vulgarity.
Another thing I love about Jimmy Carr is his exceptional talent for improvisation. He constantly provokes the public, without any shame or hesitation, any prejudice or selectiveness - absolutely anyone can be picked from the crowd and he can find something funny about anyone he picks. And he makes it rather obvious that he doesn't use actors mixed with crowd for this, you can clearly see that all of his improvisation is genuine. That truly requires amazing talent.
The shows last just about the right amount of time, they're long enough to be effective, and short enough not to bore the viewer. And to make your money's worth, the creators of these DVDs have put in quite enough additional material, including extra gigs, interviews, behind-the-scene materials, sketches etc.
One other thing that I loved about the DVDs are their inventive and witty menus. Menus are one thing that DVD publishers often neglect, but is very important because they generate the viewer's first impression, thus affecting the entire viewing experience. Therefore, thumbs up for this!
Before ending this review, I'll just mention the packaging. This is obviously a very important part of the DVDs as well, because, as is, similarly, the case with the menus, this also affects the viewer's first impression, although with slightly less impact. Unfortunately, in my opinion, this is the part where the publisher failed. The outer box could have been more robust and more imaginative, as well as the covers inside. The DVD boxes seem a bit cheap, and they could have also thrown in some booklet or something.
Nevertheless, I would say, for the price I paid for this item, I got even more than I expected.
Well, there you have it. This is a remarkable, innovative, improvisational stand-up comedy, from magnificent individual, offering fair amount of material, good picture and sound quality, innovative menus, tons of fun for reasonable price.
All in all, something that I, more than gladly, recommend!
