I`m not often interested in new releases these days as the scene is awash with manufactured pop & dour, uninspired indie rock but this initially stirred my senses. Here were the kind of act rarely seen these days that were unafraid to present unashamedly melodic & mainstream pop songs devoid of modern affectations such as samples, raps or `featuring` other artists.
After hearing the heavy radio play of the excellent `Glorious` & `You`ll be mine` i was keen to check out the whole album. Sadly i don`t think the girls mantain the quality of those songs throughout. Too often the songs just don`t cut the mustard and are rather mundane next to the two i`ve mentioned. Don`t get me wrong, on a couple of occasions the plaintive approach works as on the gorgeous closing track ` i put your records on`
Elsewhere the songs either lapse into obvious pastiche ( Expect a lawsuit from the Mamas & the Papas over `Kissing you Goodbye`) or struggle to conjure up convincing melodies as on the rather painful ` Good Samaritan`
It`s a shame as the best songs on here are genuinely great and the harmonies & playing superb. Maybe they spent too much time on the big numbers & the others inevitably suffered by comparison. Despite this i still hold out a lot of hope for them as they`re undeniably talented and worth 10 `Girls Aloud` any day.
