Good battlefield guide of Bavaria,
This review is from: In Pursuit of Hitler: The Seventh (US) Army Drive (Battleground) (Hardcover)This is a detailed analysis of the movement of the 7th US Army during its rapid advance from the Rhine to Berchtesgaden between March and May 1945. This advance includes a series of actions which have not received the attention that they perhaps deserve due to the traditional focus being on events in the more strategically important North German Plain. The author has taken great care to travel the routes of advance and know the ground rather than just repeat a `desktop history' and it shows. There are several examples of battlefield explanation that can only come from somebody who knows the ground.
Interlinked with the battle accounts are good background explanations of the key events surrounding National Socialism in Bavaria. Anybody wanting to gain an insight into the rise of Nazi Germany through the architecture of Munich and Nuremburg will find this very helpful. A visit to Nuremburg is always worthwhile to place the insanity of the Nazi hysteria in its proper context. Similarly Dachau, the `laboratory' for the concentration camp system is explored and the Author from his local knowledge, adds much detail concerning the capture of the camp and its surrounding features. His chapter on the capture of Berchtesgaden is spot on.
Overall a very good book covering all aspects of Nazism in Bavaria and how that regime was finally crushed.
