4.0 out of 5 stars Don't wait, 22 April 2010
This review is from: Wait Until Dark [DVD] (DVD)
I remembered seeing about ten minutes of this film on television some years ago and finding the setup interesting, so I bought the DVD - it turned out to be better than I'd hoped. Wait Until Dark is a surprisingly tense piece of film making, a taut thriller which is by turns comic and grotesque. Some savage moments (one character is hit repeatedly with a car in a car park) make it stand out from some of the other late 60s thrillers. Hepburn is very good, if a little melodramatic in one or two instances - anyway, the real star here is Arkin, who takes a cardboard cutout of a 'bad guy' and fashions him into something terrifyingly real and three dimensional. There is a dip in the middle of the film, hence the four stars, and the print could have been cleaned up a little more in places for the DVD release - but none of this matters when you're watching the excruciating final ten minutes. I actually found myself on the edge of my seat, and *that* jump will stay with me for a long time, I'm sure.

Extras are fairly slim, but it's nice to see any on the disc. The featurette is a short series of anecdotes from Arkin and producer Mel Ferrer which is nice enough. There is a trailer of course, but what really pleased me was the inclusion of a warning to be shown in cinemas, that during the final moments of the film the theatre lights would be dimmed to the legal limit. It's not often that such contemporary materials get included on a DVD so it was nice to see it here. I'd strongly reccomend the film, and watching it in as dark an area as possible.
